One of the reasons why superhero flicks are so popular is that we all like to secretly imagine what it would be like to swing through the NYC streets, dropping bad guys like Spider-Man. Trying this in real life, though, typically ends in pain, property damage, and possibly jail time. So here's a selection of our favorite superhero video games, where you can live out your costumed fantasies -- no, not those costumed fantasies, just the clean ones -- in relative safety.
Although there's no Spider-Man movie coming out this year, that's not stopping Activision's excellent series of Spidey games. The latest sees our red-suited hero tackling his longtime foe Venom amid the skyscrapers and streets of a quarantined New York City. You'll also run into the lovely Black Cat, not-so-lovely Luke Cage, and not-at-all-lovely-unless-you're-into-that-sort-of-thing Wolverine, as you web your way around the Big Apple. Best of all, you can flip between Spidey's classic outfit and his black symbiote suit at the tap of a button, gaining a completely different set of moves and abilities when you do. Ever wanted to see Spider-Man chuck a car at a perp? Here's your chance.
Who'd have thought that making video games based on LEGO toys would be such a success? Not us, but fortunately some bright spark had more vision than we apparently do. LEGO Batman is the latest in one of gaming's most successful series, and not only does it let you play the Caped Crusader himself, but you can also take on the role of umpteen of his famous friends and infamous foes. To the Bat-Xbox, Robin!
Even the most grizzled of gamers idolize their grannies. The latest in the smash hit Super Granny series gives our favorite geriatric superheroines their own adventure, pitting them against the evil Colonel Hans Foote. Who has stolen all the blue hair dye in the world, and...no, just kidding, Granny. Please don't hurt us. Granny, put down the table.
Who'd win in a fight, Batman or Sub-Zero? This perennial playground puzzler will be answered on November 10, when the worlds of Mortal Kombat and DC Comics are married in a video game. This isn't going to be one of those happy storybook weddings, though: as you'd expect from a Mortal Kombat-style fighter, lots and lots of domestic violence is in the cards. With the likes of Catwoman, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman taking on the Mortal Kombat cast, it's a hero's dream come true.
It's a little long in the tooth, but if you'd rather create your own superhero than play as an already-established character, this massively-multiplayer online game is the one for you. Once you've picked your outrageous costume, your superpowers, and a suitably impressive moniker, you're let loose in an online world filled with opportunities for crime-stopping...or crime-starting, if you're playing as a nefarious villain. Either way, you're bound to have a super time.
If you're not sold on all this next-gen, Wii-60-PS3 nonsense, don't despair. This Hulk game released on PS2, Xbox and Gamecube back in 2005, and it still measures up today. Ultimate Destruction perfectly captures what's so cool about the Green Goliath; namely, that he can smash absolutely everything. Want to flatten a car into a sheet of twisted metal and use it as a shield? Go ahead. Want to jump aboard a fighter jet and wrestle it to the ground? Course you do. Ultimate Destruction will let you do all that and more at a price that's wallet friendly.
File this under "one to watch," because it's still a ways out from release. But it's looking so good we just couldn't resist throwing it into the mix. DC Universe Online is a Sony-developed online game with renowned DC comic book artist Jim Lee heading up its creative team. Players will be able to log in, create their own alternate identity, and immerse themselves in the rich world of the DC comics. Talk about tantalizing.
