Best new Games: Week Of 9/1/08

Sep 2, 2008

How's your pocketbook looking? If you're a game fan, you better be prepared for a financial onslaught. Traditionally the busiest time of the year for triple-A releases, the fall season is well underway -- and it's only just September. This week sees EA's anticipated Spore hitting stores in what could well turn out to be the most influential release of the year. If you're at all serious about your games -- or you loved its creator Will Wright's other games, like The Sims -- you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Top Three:

Spore

OK, so strictly speaking, Spore isn't out until Sunday. But it's such an eagerly anticipated event that we couldn't resist putting it in early. If you haven't heard about it (where have you been?), it's the latest game from Sims maestro Will Wright, which simulates the evolution of a life form from cellular beginnings to interstellar conquest. In the likely event that that's enough to pique your interest, check out our Spore Launch Central for everything you need to know.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

This high-adrenaline shooter hit streets over the weekend, packs drop-in, drop-out co-operative multiplayer in addition to the usual online options, and includes a range of toys that'll put a smile on the face of any growing boy. Helicopters, flamethrowers, and even nuclear airstrikes are all at the fingertips of Mercs 2 players. Toasty. If you have a penchant for destruction, or could use a few hours running through the jungle with a friend, give it a try.

The Mystery of the Crystal Portal

Nicole Rankwist is on a quest to find her missing father -- and the origins of her rather unfortunate surname. Tag along in this top-rated hidden object game, which will take you around the globe as you follow its intricate story.
