########################################### Stardock Entertainment Presents... Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords [March 2006 Demo v1.0X] http://www.galciv2.com ########################################### Overview -------- Thank you for trying the demo for Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. Be sure to checkout the manual and beginners strategy guide that are linked in your Start menu. We also welcome your participation on the forums at http://www.GalCiv2.com, where you can chat about the game with other players, browse the download libraries, and more! * Important Note on Installation * ---------------------------------- The installation autorun and the shortcut on Windows XP use Stardock's DesktopX Pro and the Windows Scripting Host support that comes with Windows to provide a custom interface for installing and launching the game. Some anti-virus appplications (McAfee in particular, but they are by no means the only vendor), incorrectly label any application using scripts as malicious. This is NOT the case. The gadgets are used to launch the install or game, link to the websites, and provide an interface for you to update your serial number in the registry. Set your scanning program to ignore it, adjust the sensitivity of any script-scanning options, or change the shortcuts to run the application to GalCiv2.exe. Getting Updates --------------- Your best bet to get updated versions of Galactic Civilizations II is through Stardock Central (http://www.sdcentral.net). Visit http://www.galciv2.com for details on updates. Standalone update installers will also be available from the website. A Note on Campaign Missions --------------------------- Winning a mission doesn't always mean killing every last potential enemy. Focus on the mission objectives. Gameplay Odds and Ends ---------------------- * The manual has a listing of other hotkeys and tips, but a couple are worth mentioning here. * Create a shortcut to the GalCiv2.exe file and add a 'w' (without the quotation marks) parameter to it to launch the game in a window. * Press Ctrl-S to QuickSave a game. * When a Constructor is selected, press the B key to build a starbase. * When a fleet or fleets are selected in the ship stack, press U to ungroup the ships in the fleet(s). * When first starting a new game, press Ctrl-N to create a new map with your current game settings. * The Set Rally Point button the left side of the main map interface can be used to establish targets for newly constructed vessels. After creating your first rally point, the little circle with a downward arrow next to the planet thumbnail (when you have a planet selected) can be used to set the rally point target for ships constructed on that world. * Save games and preferences are stored under Documents and Settings\%username\My Documents\GalCiv2. You can edit the prefs.ini file in that directory to adjust the game resolution to custom values if the in-game detection doesn't pickup special modes that are supported. Prefs.ini will be regenerated the next time the game runs if you remove it. Video/Sound Card Issues ----------------------- * If you experience stuttering with the movies (especially with older or integrated video chipsets), go under the Options menu and turn down the Anti-Aliasing setting to 2x or 0 (the default is 4x). * If your video card has less than 32MB of memory, this game will likely not run at all. Your monitor must support a minimum resolution of 1024x768 and your desktop must be running in 32-bit color mode. * This game requires video cards that support DirectX 9.0c or later. It is required for the TrueType font support that this game uses. Some older Intel Extreme graphics adapters do not support this. * If you run into any visual problems, make sure your video card is using the latest drivers. We have found that older video cards have problems with some of the features in DirectX 9.0c that this game makes use of. --- Seriously. Don't assume you have the latest drivers. --- * Most video cards capable of running the game should support a software mouse cursor (the default). If you experience flickering or information in your debug.err about lack of support for a color cursor, please toggle the option on the Video settings page to enable the hardware mouse cursor. * Lower-end video cards (e.g. GeForce 4 MX 420's) will run the game, but lack the texture and shader support for all the graphical effects. Your ships and planets will lack the detail you might see in screenshots elsewhere. * At the opposite end of the spectrum, higher-end workstation-class cards like Quadro's should be able to run the game, but you may experience video corruption of various elements as they tend to be optimized for OpenGL applications. * If you have a dual-core AMD CPU, please make sure you have installed the latest processor drivers from www.amd.com (if you experience graphics oddities like ship models spinning). Or, use Task Manager to set the processor affinity to 1 cpu. * If you are experiencing problems with missing stars, please try changing the first dropdown in Control Panel / Language to US English. And check for an update on www.galciv2.com. * Updated sound drivers can be helpful as well. You may need to go to the website for your system manufacturer to find updates. * If you do run into an issue, check the debug.err which will likely provide useful information for diagnosing the problem. Debugging --------- * Please see the notes above on having updated video and sound drivers. It's very important for compatibility with the latest DirectX and features the game attempts to use (if supported by your hardware). * A 'debug.err' file is created in the gameplay directory each time the game runs with information on your hardware, drivers, and details of the game loading various elements. * Create a shortcut to 'galciv2.exe debug' to output even more information to the debug.err file, including what capabilities your video card claims to support. * Save games from Documents and Settings\%username\My Documents\GalCiv2 may be useful in tracking down issues if it's reproducible when you reload a game.
