Uncharted Scores Big in Japan

Sequel sells three times original in debut week.

The big mover and shaker in the Japanese sales charts this week is a Western title. Uncharted 2 debuted for the Japanese PS3 last week. Backed by a full localization and a reasonably sized marketing campaign, the game managed to sell 54,000 units in its first week according to Media Create.

While 54,000 units may not seem like much for a game of Uncharted 2's caliber, it is more than three times the first week's sales of the original. In our tours of Tokyo, we saw sellouts in a number of locations, an observation that Media Create echoed in its analysis.

Aside from Uncharted, the top ten chart was mostly older titles. Here's the full list covering October 12 through October 18.

  • 1. Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver (Pokemon, DS): 165,000 (total 2,639,000)
  • 2. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo, Wii): 118,000 (610,000)
  • 3. Friend Collection (Nintendo, DS): 63,000 (1,414,000)
  • 4. Inazuma Eleven 2 (Level-5, DS): 61,000 (437,000)
  • 5. Uncharted 2 (SCE, PS3): 54,000
  • 6. Okami (Capcom, Wii): 24,000
  • 7. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii): 23,000 (1,300,000)

  • 10. Love Plus (Konami, DS): 20,000 (141,000)

Most hardware saw slowdowns for the week. With nothing major out this week, this is a trend that could continue into next week's charts.
