UK Release Roundup: Fun in the sun

With Andy Murray crashing out of Wimbledon at the more than capable hands of Rafael Nadal, Lewis Hamilton on the verge of a nervous breakdown before his home Grand Prix this weekend and what looks like another barren Olympics, the British sporting season is finally drawing to close so we can at last divert our full attention to the world of virtual gaming.

Arkanoid and Space Invaders are both given the remake treatment, on the DS and PSP respectively. Occupying opposing ends of the quality scale, Arkanoid scraped together a mere 4.5 on the review scale as opposed to Space Invaders Extreme's more respectable 8.5, proving its mettle as one of the finest retro re-imaginings of late.

Sony's torrid week has at least a glimmer of hope at its tail end, with the much belated but nevertheless welcome release of the DualShock 3 in the UK, topped off with Buzz!'s first appearance on the PlayStation 3. Buzz! Quiz TV is a solid package that hopefully will blossom into a definitive party game, and for more musings on its merits point your browser in this direction. In summary, then, 7.8.

PlayStation 3 also gets its own rather sprightly racing game this week in the shape of System 3's Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli. What it lacks in polish it makes up for with heart, and for anyone long enough in the tooth to remember Yu Suzuki's F355 Challenge should find in here to warm the cockles. The Escher-em-up Echochrome debuts on the PSP in the UK this week, and it's a fine perspective-bending puzzler that's well suited for whiling away the long summer hours.

It earned a fine 8.5 when reviewed by our US team, and expect a PlayStation Network title to follow soon in its wake.

Not forgetting the Xbox 360, which at last gets its own version of Unreal Tournament III. Whether it can topple Call of Duty 4 from its longstanding position at the top of Xbox Live remains to be seen, but it's a well qualified fragfest, as our Australian team recently attested.

And finally the Wii gets Capcom's charismatic We Love Golf, attempting to wrestle away the stranglehold Tiger Wood's currently has on the consoles pitch and putt market. It's being mangled through our review machine, with cries of 'fore' currently resonating from the games room – so expect to see it within the next couple of days.
