GDC 2008: SingStar Solo

Isolate your vocals in the new PS3 title.

If there's one complaint a lot of folks launch when they pick up a version of SingStar on the PlayStation 2, it's that they can't shut the original artist up. If you want to sing the latest Avril Lavigne track, the princess of punk-pop is along for the ride.

That won't be the case in SingStar on the PlayStation 3.

During the GDC presentation "Voice of an Angel: Next-Gen Audio Processing and Effects for SingStar on PS3," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Audio and Video Manager Dan Bardino showcased the ability to turn on and off a song's original vocal track.

The feature was in the very first SingStar game on the PlayStation 2 but required a cappella and instrumental versions of each song. Those were hard to come by and a pain to create, so the feature was dropped in future versions of the game. Now, thanks to the professional audio software plug-ins the PS3 version uses, you'll be able to see and hear how horrible you really sound when you play the game.
