Listen to Prototype in 7.1 Ways

The upcoming open-world game will boast brand new THX tech.

During CES last week, Sierra and THX announced the upcoming open-world game Prototype will be the first videogame to utilize Neural-THX Surround. Game audio has been utilizing 5.1 surround sound for some time, but the upgrade to 7.1 allows gamers (with an enabled stereo system) to add two additional speakers to the rear of their living room. THX says the added sound sources will fill in gaps in what they hope to be a 360-degree listening experience.

"Game developers and consumers alike are recognizing the importance of accurate surround sound to the overall game experience, and the move to 7.1 surround represents a natural evolution of game audio," said Dr. Mark Tuffy, games director at THX Ltd. "The Prototype storyline and use of surround sound elements make it the perfect fit for 7.1 gameplay."

THX says a recent Nielsen survey shows that more than 48 percent of Xbox 360 and 54 percent of PS3 consoles are connected to multi-channel home theater systems. Neural-THX Surround is now being integrated into most new receivers.
