A Glimpse of 2008

2008 promises to be the year that the PlayStation 3 really starts to hold its own. The list of upcoming exclusive titles for the system is like a future "Greatest Hits" catalog. LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Infamous, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Haze, SOCOM Confrontation and more should all prove to be winners that you'll only find on the PlayStation 3, while third-party titles like Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, Burnout Paradise, Resident Evil 5, Soulcalibur IV, Tom Clancy's EndWar and more will bolster the library.

Sony still has a lot of catching up to do, however, so expect the company to turn up the heat on the competition a bit. While advertising for the system had been fairly low-key for most of the year, a series of impressive TV ads began running in late 2007 and should prove to be only the beginning.

What will really set the tone for the system's future however is how well the biggest of the big games we mentioned above turns out. If Metal Gear Solid 4 blows everyone away while LittleBigPlanet drums up a hardcore fan base and PlayStation Home gives people a reason to go online for long periods of time with their system, then the PlayStation 3 should be set for a pretty strong year.

One other positive for Sony in 2008 is that Microsoft and Nintendo look to have already dished out most of their biggest franchises very recently, leaving the doors wide open for Sony to become the hot topic of the year. Discussion breeds interest, which in turn breeds sales.
