Midterm Corrections?
Everyone knows that E3 is the industry's premiere showcase for upcoming games. Practically everything that will be released before year's end makes an appearance at the show to give you a glimpse of what's to come. While it does give us a good idea, you can never be 100% sure on how the final product will turn out. So here's a wrap-up of what we picked at E3, and how our picks turned out.
Our pick for Best Action Game went to Heavenly Sword for its combat mechanics, but in the end we only thought it was a decent experience because of repetition. The game is great in short bursts, hence our love for the E3 demo.
Our Best First-Person Shooter selection went to Killzone 2, which still isn't out yet, so we can't comment on how that one will turn out. However, our runners-up picks went to Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament III, both of which turned out to be fantastic.
SingStar took our nod for Best Music Game, partly because Rock Band and Guitar Hero III weren't playable on the PlayStation 3 at the show, while Burnout Paradise took home our award for Best Racing Game. Like Killzone 2, SingStar and Burnout Paradise haven't hit store shelves yet so we can't comment on how good the final games will be, but we're still excited for their eventual release.
Folklore picked up our award for Best RPG, and the game turned out to be quite a fun title, so we'll give ourselves a pat on the back for that selection. NBA '08 and Pain took our picks for Best Sports Game and Best Downloadable Game, respectively, and both turned out to be decent titles.
Best Graphics Technology went to Killzone 2 while Best Artistic Design went to LittleBigPlanet, both of which, like many other titles on this list, still aren't out yet. There's no doubt that each were worthy of their awards at the time though.
LittleBigPlanet also picked up our trophies for Technical Excellence and Most Innovative Design, while Warhawk won our Best Multiplayer Game award. Given the latter title's fantastic showing and, so far, long-lived online service, we can sleep well at night with that selection.
Our selection for Best Non-Playable Presentation went to Metal Gear Solid 4. Yeah, we got that one right.
And finally, our choice for Game of the Show went to Killzone 2. We've only seen a bit more of the game since E3, and though we haven't yet been able to play a whole lot of it, there's no doubt that Killzone 2 was the E3 game everyone was talking about.
