Speed Racer Officially Gets License

The game is headed to consoles to coincide with the movie and DVD releases.

Today Warner Bros. Interactive confirmed what Joel Silver told IGN at the San Diego Comic-Con a couple weeks ago: a Speed Racer videogame is in the works based on the upcoming Wachowski brothers film. Destined for the Wii, DS, and PlayStation 2, Speed Racer puts players behind the wheel and in control of several characters from the movie. The Wii and DS versions will arrive in 2008 alongside the film, and the PS2 port will be timed with the DVD release.

The Wii and PS2 versions should be identical, featuring combat racing "car-fu." The Wachowski Brothers are lending insight and movie assets to the game's development. John Gaeta, special effects wiz and longtime collaborator with the Wachowski's also working on Speed Racer, is working closely with developer Sidhe and Warner Bros. to ensure an aesthetic connection between game and film.

Sidhe is also working on Jackass: The Game and previously developed the PC titles Barbie Beach Vacation and Barbie Sparkling Ice Show.

"Larry and Andy [Wachowski] are videogame fans themselves, so they believe that an interactive game is a key component to the entire Speed Racer experience," said film producer Joel Silver.

The Wachowski brothers previously helped create the Matrix videogames.
