Of Blood Bowls and Cyanide

Nasty fun: the literally fantastic fantasy football franchise becomes a videogame.

Football's awfully entertaining, sure, but did you know they did it all with orcs and trolls? Table-top fantasy game Blood Bowl has proved this for years, and now it will soon make its case as a videogame. Today Games Workshop announced it has licensed developer Cyanide to create games based on the Blood Bowl franchise -- where "dirty tricks, bribing the referee and even pitch invasions by fans" are standard fare.

Why Cyanide? In addition to the Cycling Manager series, the studio created Chaos League, a hybrid sports-RTS title not at all subtly resembling Blood Bowl. Though Games Workshop may have been upset at first, its dispute with Cyanide was settled "amicably for an undisclosed sum" -- and the Blood Bowl rights were handed to a studio which clearly had some experience with the genre.

Meantime, as part of the settlement, Games Workshop has grabbed the Chaos League property, for which it plans no further titles.
