Ultima X: Odyssey Canceled

Was the shadow of World of Warcraft too immense?

A quiet update on the official site for Ultima X: Odyssey announces that the ambitious MMORPG has been canceled.

"As of today, development on Ultima X: Odyssey has ended," the announcement reads. "This isn't an easy decision but it's the right move for the future of all things Ultima, including the community and the team."

The posting explains that the Ultima X team will refocus its efforts on Ultima Online development, including new expansions and an unannounced UO project.

Revealed last summer, Ultima X: Odyssey was meant to live alongside Ultima Online, offering a MMORPG experience more continuous with the original Ultima series storyline, and featuring stylized visuals running on a version of the Unreal engine.

While we're sad to see UXO go, it's hard not to suspect that in the face of the game's closest competitor, the much higher-profile World of Warcraft, EA decided to cut potential losses and focus on a proven title.

We'll bring you more details on the cancellation and new Ultima Online developments as soon as we get them.
