E3 2004: New Super Mario Bros. for DS

Here's a surprise: Nintendo will be bringing a brand new Super Mario Bros. design to the Nintendo DS handheld, and we've got the first footage of the game in action.

The game features 3D objects in a fixed 2D sidescrolling environment, with a fully polygonal Mario running around the environment. Though gameplay elements are currently sketchy, the video footage shows off some nifty effects, like a Goomba eating a mushroom and growing to gargantuan proportions. Mario, too, can super-size even bigger than he's used to...watch him balloon up to full screen and move powerfully through the environments.
