Joe Lieberman Gets Huffy About GTA

The presidential hopeful decries Rockstar's gritty franchise.

Reuters reported today that Joseph Lieberman, Democratic presidential hopeful and apparent connoisseur of modern electronic entertainment, severely denounced the Grand Theft Auto series of games as "horrendous."

"You ought to see one called Grand Theft Auto, he is reported as saying. "The player is rewarded for attacking a woman, pushing her to the ground, kicking her repeatedly and then ultimately killing her, shooting her over and over again."

"I call on the entertainment companies -- they've got a right to do that, but they have a responsibility not to do it if we want to raise the next generation of our sons to treat women with respect."

Lieberman is reported as saying that videogames have improved, but that Grand Theft Auto is one of a several that are "horrendous." It is not clear whether Mr. Lieberman has spent much time with a GTA game -- which does not provide any particular reward for attacking women -- but it's clear that the hit M-rated franchise continues to be a magnet for heated emotions and controversy.
