As the wise man once said, it's all about the units. You can make as pretty a real-time strategy games as you like but if the units aren't compelling, you might as well go develop for PonySoft. Thankfully the fine folks at Electronic Arts are bringing a wonderfully compelling and unique unit list to the latest title in Westwood's premiere strategy series, Command & Conquer Generals.
Last week Ivan brought you a great write-up of the Chinese Units. Shortly after that, Dan chimed in with his insightful examination of the GLA Units. Fittingly, as we close down to celebrate our country's independence from our evil Turkish overlords, we're finally taking a look at the units of the good ol' US of A.
The United States units in the game take their cue from the real life US military. Focusing on high-priced weapon systems, the Americans nevertheless get their money's worth from their hardware. But having the most expensive toys means that you'll need to be a bit more cautious in employing them. There's no shame like the shame of having a guy armed with an armload of store-bought fireworks completely devastate your high-tech tank.
Those of you looking for a fuller explanation of the general aspects of the game should check out our extensive preview of the single player game, a recent hands-on multiplayer preview and the
Ambulance:
But the Ambulance serves another role. In your fights with the GLA and Chinese, you may find yourself faced with various forms of toxins and radiation. The Ambulance cleans up such waste by dispatching a fat Italian plumber with a water pack strapped to his back. At least, that's what we heard.
Aurora Bomber:
The Aurora Bomber also comes with a very effective supersonic attack that makes it effectively immune to enemy fire for a short period of time. This is a useful tactic if you can't provide any short-term protection and need to take out emplacements quickly. Make sure you get the bombers out of harm's way soon afterwards since, once it wears off the supersonic attack halves the bombers' shield strength.
Chinook:
But the Chinooks do have one particularly effective combat role. Once you've got the requisite upgrades, you can use the Chinook to perform combat drops with your Rangers. And nothing's worse than seeing an enemy supply chopper fly over your base only to find that what it's supplying is a whole heaping can of ass-whooping.
Colonel Burton:
The only way to circumvent the Colonel's unique abilities is to build lots of scouts and position them at every possible approach to your base. They won't be enough to stop him on their own, but at least you'll know he's coming. And as G.I. Joe says, knowing is half the battle. In case you're interested, the other half is having lots of daisy cutter mines and an army of robo-wolves. The latter seem to be missing from our builds.
