Pro Logic II Cometh

Dolby and Factor 5 make it official.

Companies Dolby Laboratories and Factor 5 today announced the introduction of Dolby Pro Logic II to all Nintendo GameCube developers. The technology will be available to software houses through Factor 5's MusyX tool.

Dolby Pro Logic II delivers a full five channels of surround sound through the regular stereo connections featured on the GameCube console. The technology features full frequency range on five channels, compatibility with existing hardware and backward compatibility with stereo and surround equipment.

"Pro Logic II is ideal for Nintendo GameCube because the technology allows developers to create astounding audio effects in their games without a significant hit to the console's CPU," said Jack Buser, manager of game developer relations, Dolby Laboratories. "Pro Logic II is simple to implement and can enhance the audio experience in almost any game genre."

"As the developer of Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2, the first game ever to feature Dolby Pro Logic II, we found Dolby Pro Logic II was easy to use and was seamlessly incorporated-it's an extremely clean solution for games," said Julian Eggebrecht, President of Factor 5. "Dolby Pro Logic II is the surround sound technology we have been waiting for."

Given that Factor 5's MusyX environment is included as a standard with GameCube software development kits, there is no longer any reason why forthcoming games won't fully support Dolby Pro Logic II on Nintendo's next-generation console.

More as it becomes available.
