As we inch closer to the pivotal 2008 presidential elections, the issue of voter registration -- specifically for the under 30 crowd -- is becoming a hot topic.
One that certainly isn't lost on Microsoft.
On Thursday, the company announced an innovative partnership with Rock the Vote that will allow Xbox Live subscribers to register to vote without leaving the comfort of their couch.
Rock the Vote's executive director Heather Smith dished on the bold move.
"Xbox is a natural partner to help us reach out to youth voters," she said. "To realize our goal of registering 2 million young Americans by this fall, we need to go where young Americans are, and there's no doubt in our minds that many are on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE."
"Many" might be an understatement. With 12 million members, Xbox Live is technically bigger than perpetual swing state Ohio.
"If Xbox LIVE were a state, it would rank as the country's seventh largest, giving it approximately 20 electoral votes, Microsoft said in their press release.
Xbox Live voter registration will launch in time with the Democratic National Convention on Monday, August 25, though the bi-partisan service will have a presence at both conventions.
