Wii Fit leaves "£20 million toll of destruction" in British houses

Video game sparks wave of dented top hats, broken monocles, spilled tea

If you're one of the millions already shedding pounds with the latest Nintendo hit, Wii Fit, you might want to make sure your treasured trinkets, photos of your sadly-missed granny, and priceless Ming vases are out of reach.

British newspaper The Telegraph reports this week that a new study commissioned by an insurance company indicates 20% of women admitted "having accidents" while using living room exercise equipment. Presumably, they're talking accidents of the "breakages and minor injuries" type rather than the naughty-puppy variety. Nationwide, the damage amounts to the equivalent of nearly $40 million.

As if more proof were needed that Wii Fit is becoming an international obsession, a staggering 86% of the women polled in the survey either already owned the game or were planning to buy it.

The Telegraph story also shamelessly plugs the latest YouTube sensation, a cameraphone video of Florida advertising executive Lauren Bernat playing Wii Fit in her drawers. Naturally we'd be failing in our duty if we did not point out that you can find it somewhere amid these.
