Scares for Friday the 13th

Settle in for some chills and thrills with these cool Friday the 13th game picks.

It's Friday the 13th! You can pretend you don't care, but we know you'll be jumping whenever the floorboard creaks or the cat knocks over a plant on the ledge. You might as well embrace it; shut off the lights, crank up the amp, and dig into these great interactive terrors.

Resident Evil (Capcom)

Although it's a touch dated, the original Resident Evil is widely considered one of the real classics of the survival-horror genre. From the sumptuous mansion setting to the jump-out-of-your-seat scares to the hilariously bad dialogue that'd fit right into any low-budget horror movie you care to mention. Initially released on the PlayStation, it was remade for the Gamecube and DS in more recent years. It's still a great game, and well worth a revisit - and if that's too retro for you, check out the entirely more up-to-date Resident Evil 4 instead.

Silent Hill (Konami)

Enter the town of Silent Hill, where you'll find the best psychological horror video game series around. All four of the Silent Hill games have their fans, but the second is widely held to be the best. It's available on PS2, Xbox and PC, although the console versions are the easiest to find. Whatever goes wrong for you on Friday 13th, take comfort in the fact that absolutely everyone in all four Silent Hill games has had much worse luck than you.

F.E.A.R. (Vivendi Games)

Ever wondered what happened to Samara once they were done filming The Ring? She's right here in F.E.A.R., still popping up out of nowhere and scaring the pants off people. F.E.A.R. at least has the courtesy of equipping you with all kinds of high caliber weaponry to steel your nerve, although it'll be of more use against the numerous opposing soldiers than against the game's diminutive villain herself. Not only does it have stunning next-gen visuals, it's one of the only horror games with a significant multiplayer component. Find it on PC or 360, and a PS3 version is expected next month.

Fatal Frame (Tecmo)

Ever thought about becoming a freelance photographer? Play the Fatal Frame series and you'll think again. Although taking pictures of ghosts sounds more like a recipe for a lame daytime TV "paranormal" investigation show than a terrifying video game, the Fatal Frame games are easily among the most eerie experiences the gaming world can offer. Three games make up the series.

Eternal Darkness (Nintendo)

This much-loved Gamecube Lovecraftian classic is one of the scariest horror games of all, thanks in no small part to its fourth-wall-breaking loss of sanity effects that'll leave you wondering where the game stops and reality begins. "But I turned my Gamecube into a novelty toilet roll dispenser," you say. "Curse you, Friday 13th!" No problem: the newer Nintendo Wii will play Eternal Darkness (and all other Gamecube games) just fine, although you'll need a Gamecube controller. Thanks to the game's semi-retired status, it shouldn't be too pricey either.
