Keeping it in the Family

Forgive me, Don Puzo, I cannot pay you this month's royalties

Anthony Puzo, son of Godfather author Mario Puzo, is suing Paramount for a slice of the royalties it received for EA's recent game based on the classic gangster flick.

Puzo's court filing claims his father, who died in 1999, agreed with Paramount to receive "a significant share" of Godfather-related revenues, the AP reports. As Puzo Senior's heir, Anthony is claiming at least $1 million from the royalty payments from EA's The Godfather, which was released in 2006 across most major platforms.

Coincidentally, EA honcho John Riccitiello chose this week to drop a few tidbits about the next Godfather game during a chin-wag with investors. He promises it'll go beyond the original Godfather's Grand Theft Auto-style gameplay, incorporating an alternative top-down view, and other elements more usually seen in real-time strategy games.

Could Paramount executives be about to wake up with pieces of dead horse in their beds? Presumably that'll depend on how the legal maneuvering plays out -- but we know one thing: we wouldn't mess with the Puzo family.
