Fans of the world's most famous spy will have both the video game and movie to occupy their attention this November, but the dapper MI6 agent has been doing this dance for years now. Take a tour with us in our WayBack machine as we pit James Bond video games and movies against one another in a Thunderdome-esque battle for supremacy.
The reboot that rebuilt the Bond movie meets the shooter that changed video games forever. GoldenEye turned TV star Pierce Brosnan, into a Hollywood leading man, introduced Judi Dench's feminine "M," and made Bond cool again. It also gave us new appreciation for Famke Jannsen's thigh muscles. On the flip, the N64 classic game's same-screen multiplayer modes took over dorm rooms and shattered GPAs across the globe, while redefining first person shooters with its objective based gameplay.
WINNER: The game, because it still has yet to be topped.
Two crappy sequels enter, one crappy sequel leaves. Despite the name, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent had little to do with the original game, and ended up being a half-baked shooter with no challenge, and next to the original GoldenEye its multiplayer looked lackluster. On the other hand, The World is Not Enough boasted the worst Bond girl in cinematic history: Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist named Dr. Christmas Jones.
WINNER: The film, but only because we really dig the Garbage title song.
The best James Bond film of all time goes against the only video game to star Sean Connery. The From Russia With Love video game was an amazing recreation of the 1963 movie, with accurate likenesses and new, original dialog recorded by Connery, though the story was a little messed up. On the other hand, the movie opens with James Bond being strangled (spoilers!!) and only gets better from there with one of the best Bond tales ever.
WINNER: The film: a recreation of a classic is still just a pale imitation.
Willem Dafoe versus Christopher Walken. While universally reviled, we have a real soft spot for A View To A Kill. Whether it's the Duran Duran song or Walken's killer villain portrayal, we'd happily defend this to the end, even if Roger Moore looks ready to be put out to pasture in it. Gamers made out a lot better with the original Bond game, Everything or Nothing, which starred an age-appropriate Pierce Brosnan, hotties Heidi Klum and Shannon Elizabeth, and Willem Dafoe as our lead baddie.Fulff aside, the game was actually really good, and one of the best ever released for Bond.
WINNER: The game, because a James Bond game worth playing is always a win in our book.
An action game with an incomprehensible title takes on a movie often confused with an ESPN 2 poker special. Name-calling aside, we've learned long ago that you can't judge a Bond by its title, and for further proof of this, rent Octopussy. Casino Royale proved once again why James Bond is an icon, and its awe-inspiring parkour scene excused the long stretches of us watching a super spy play cards. The Quantum of Solace game lets us step into the tux of Daniel Craig to play both films, so it's like two games in one, even if we're not convinced more is merrier... yet.
WINNER: The film, because without its success we wouldn't have a new game OR movie sequel.
