Brett Favre remains a Packer on Madden cover

When you're a jet, you're not a jet all the way.

Brett Favre sure knows how to liven up an offseason.

Despite being traded to the New York Jets, the un-retired Hall of Fame quarterback will remain in a Green Bay Packer uniform on the cover of the impending Madden NFL 09.

But according to MTV's Multiplayer blog, a free downloadable roster update will let gamers turn Favre into New York's starting quarterback the day the game releases. The update will not be mandatory, however, allowing disgruntled Packer fans the chance to live out a "What If?" scenario and play through the season with their ex-fearless leader at the helm.

EA also revealed that they will allow users to download a new cover featuring the legendary passer in Jets green and white. "Fans can print this new cover out and insert it into the case of Madden NFL 09," they told MTV.

It's the first time in the famous franchise's twenty-year history that an athlete won't begin the season playing for the team he represents on the cover, leading some to consider this another example of the mythical "Madden Curse." Past cases include Michael Vick, who broke his leg the year he appeared on the cover, and running back Shaun Alexander, who sat out six games after injuring his foot during his Madden cover year.

Madden NFL 09 hits stores August 12.
