Beatles video game announced

MTV and Apple Corps will come together in 2009.

For decades, Beatles fans have clamored for a Fab Four reunion. Next year, their wish will finally come true.

Sort of.

Courtesy of a partnership between Apple Corps (the ones who hold the rights to the Beatles discography, not the Mac kingpins), MTV and games maker Harmonix, a music video game based on the career of the legendary British band will be coming to consoles next holiday season. It marks the first time the Beatles will appear in a video game.

Though it's being made by Harmonix, the creators of the wildly successful Rock Band franchise, the new game will not be a Rock Band title. Rather, it's an entirely new endeavor taking players on a journey through the Beatles' storied career. Giles Martin, son of original Beatles mastermind George Martin and co-producer of the Cirque du Soleil Beatles stage show LOVE, will serve as Music Producer on the new project.

Excited? The surviving members certainly are.

"The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out," Sir Paul McCartney said.

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and Harmonix / Rock Band partnership," concurred Ringo Starr.

George Harrison's widow Olivia chimed in. "People are having so much fun playing Rock Band. Combined with The Beatles tracks, it is a great way to either listen or participate."

And even Yoko is on board. "It's cool. I love it and hope it will keep inspiring and encouraging the young generation for many decades."

Further details are scarce. The game will draw from the entire Beatles catalog and will use the original U.K. tracks. It will also be compatible with all Rock Band-related peripherals, though no word yet as to which consoles the game will appear.
