Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)
Looking at Shadow the Hedgehog, you can kind of see what Sega had in mind. It was 2005, the media was full of Grand Theft Auto and Halo, and Sonic didn't fit. So Sega released a game starring Shadow, who swore, shot guns, and was generally the yang to Sonic's yin. It failed. Horribly.
