Purple Picks - Week Of 9/30/08

Week Of 9/30/08

By Mike Smith

Phew. Putting together our Purple Picks for this week is considerably easier than usual, for the sole reason that the traditional fall release torrent appears to have subsided into a trickle. It's only temporary, though: the next six weeks are home to just about every 2008 video game worth caring about, and boy, there are a lot of them. Consider this an opportunity to draw breath and count your pennies- assuming, of course, you're not interested in any of this week's high-quality (but admittedly slightly niche) choices.

Silent Hill: Homecoming

WATCH TRAILER

The leaves are turning brown, grocery store aisles are packed with pumpkins, and your neighbor has put out that daft inflatable witch on his lawn again. Halloween is approaching, so what better time for a new installment in the classic Silent Hill horror series? Just be warned: anything with the Silent Hill name inevitably carries a considerable psychological-horror payload, so check the game out before you throw it to the kids.

Sonic Chronicles

WATCH TRAILER

He's bad, he's blue, and he's back: longtime Sega mascot Sonic the Hedgehog hits the DS this week, although in a form that may not be too familiar to some of his fans. Instead of the adrenaline-pumping platformers that helped him make his name (and turn Sega into a household name) his latest outing is an action-heavy role-playing game from Knights of the Old Republic developer Bioware.

Cooking Dash

SEE GAME PAGE

Two cups of frantic time-management gameplay, a quart of bold graphics, and a dash of style make one excellent game. In Cooking Dash, the proliferation of reality TV cooking shows has exacted a terrible price: there are no chefs left in Dinertown to run Flo's range of restaurants. Here's where you come in: not only does Cooking Dash see you keeping up with customers, but you have to prepare their food as well. Can you keep up, or will your restaurant dreams go up in smoke?
