Week Of 2/23/09
By Mike Smith
Put those winter blues behind you with this week's selection of brand-new video games: it's boasting not only a delightful and long-awaited Playstation 3 shooter, but also the follow-up to one of the most addictive games ever made. Oh, and you can join 50 Cent on a charming Middle East vacation to boot. Sounds like a great week's gaming to us.
Top Three
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
Get rich. Or die trying. Apparently-immortal rapper 50 Cent stars in his second video game outing this week, wherein his diamond-encrusted skull, given to him as payment for a Middle East tour, is stolen. Fiddy's gots to get paid, so off he goes on a shooting spree through numerous sandy locations in a hunt for his property. Will it be good? Will it be awful? Will it be wonderful in that sort of so-terrible-it's-actually-good sort of way? We can't wait to find out.
Killzone 2
Dropping on Friday, this dramatically good Playstation 3 sci-fi shooter is just what you'll need to get that 50 Cent taste out of your mouth. Already the receipt of numerous rave reviews, it's bound to be a hit. Although it's the follow-up to a rather lackluster PS2 game that you probably didn't play, don't let that worry you: Killzone 2's cinematic gameplay and breathtaking sci-fi action will have you hooked in no time. Best of all, 50 Cent isn't in it.
Puzzle Quest Galactrix
The original Puzzle Quest was a work of genius, combining the puzzle game heart of Bejeweled with a large-scale, role-playing-game-like plot that delivered a potent double strike of addictive gameplay. Sequel Galactrix, which ditches the old-hat swords-and-sorcery theme of the original game, switches the square gems of Bejeweled for hexagonal ones, making for deeper gameplay. Instead of spells and skulls, you'll trade laser shots with your opponents as you try to keep your shields up
