Purple Picks - Week Of 11/3/08

Week Of 11/3/08

By Mike Smith

If your head is reeling at the onslaught of great video games we've seen over the last few weeks, grab some aspirin -- it's about to get even busier. Gears of War 2, Endwar, Resistance 2 and the latest Bond game all debut this week, and that's not all. Read on for our picks from a packed week.

Top Five

Gears of War 2

WATCH TRAILER NOW

Marcus Fenix is back, and he's a touch miffed. Gears of War 2 continues Microsoft's epic tale of guns, growling, and grit. Although the single-player story looks huge, expect to spend much more time in the game's expanded multiplayer. The original Gears still enjoys enormous numbers of players even two years after its release, and you'd have to be a fool to think this one will do any worse. Rev up the chainsaw.

Quantum of Solace

WATCH VIDEO NOW

Bond is back. Yes, again. Although it's named for the just-released Daniel Craig thriller, Quantum of Solace actually incorporates content from Casino Royale as well. It has all the dark, gritty action you'd expect from the new Bond, and rolls in multiplayer content that's reminiscent of N64 classic Goldeneye. Can Quantum of Solace strike Bond gold? Check out our Launch Central and decide for yourself.

Tom Clancy's Endwar

WATCH TRAILER NOW

When the apocalypse hits, and we all wind up brains in jars, we'll still be able to play Endwar, because it's voice-activated. It's not such a bad prospect, either, because although being stuck in a glass pot would certainly have its drawbacks, Endwar is a mighty fine game. It's the latest in the Tom Clancy series of realistic wargames, but this one puts you in command of a whole army, fighting for survival in a world wracked by nuclear war. Bring on the apocalypse, we say.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

WATCH TRAILER NOW

Video games made from kid-friendly movies are usually horrible, but we really liked Activision's take on the lively Madagascar crew. It's a pretty, well-designed romp through the jungle that switches styles more often than a Project Runway episode, so it's unlikely to bore the little ones. If it were time to be talking about stocking stuffers, which it very nearly is, then this would be at the top of our list.

Restaurant Rush

SEE GAME PAGE

Time-management meets match-three in the latest in this popular series. Can you find the freshest ingredients, create your dishes with maximum efficiency, and create the right ambiance to become a top chef? Here's your chance to find out, and without any of that tedious culinary school, getting-shouted-at-by-Gordon-Ramsay nonsense.

Best of the Rest

  • Resistance 2:
If you're a PS3 owner, here's the week's highlight: this shooter sequel is looking outstanding.
  • Dr. Lynch Grave Secrets:
Acclaimed designer Jane Jensen returns in this gripping whodunit.
  • CSI New York:
Or if the gritty realism of CSI is more your bag, give this one a go.
  • Saqqarah:
Puzzle your way through this Ancient Egyptian-themed match-three game.
  • Legendary:
Fight otherworldly beasts in this imaginative shooter.
  • Jewelleria:
Build a jewel-selling empire (and fall in love).
  • Spooky Spirits:
Boo! If you're fed up with all this election nonsense, recapture last week's Halloween spirit with this cheerful spook 'em up.
