Week Of 11/11/08
By Mike Smith
Make the most of it. After this week, the vast majority of the year's top games will be sitting on store shelves, and the torrent of new releases we've been seeing over the last few weeks will be coming to an end. Not that that's a bad thing, of course: we'll finally have time to catch up on the enormous backlog of outstanding games that have slipped through the cracks, and boy, it's been a good few weeks. We suggest you do the same.
Top Five
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty 4 was one of the best games last year, and its sequel, World at War, is shaping up to be another outstanding title. World of War heads back to WWII and adds four-player co-op, a campaign that takes in both the Eastern and Western fronts, and, best of all, flamethrowers. Who can resist the lure of a flamethrower? Nobody, that's who.
Diner Dash: Flo Through Time
Cavemen, Pharaohs, pirates, and more star in Flo's latest adventure. It's not so much time management as time-travel management, after Flo's granny hotwires a microwave and turns it into a time machine. It's no less plausible than the plot of any other time travel adventure, but a lot more fun.
Shaun White Snowboarding
Real mountain resorts, real tricks, and really well integrated multiplayer make Shaun White far more than just another "extreme" sports game. It's powered by the same graphics engine as last year's gorgeous Assassin's Creed, it packs everything from high-class mountain destinations to backwoods ruins, and is designed by real, genuine snowboarders. Grab your board and check it out.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Of course, if you're one of the world's 11 million Warcraft players, none of the other games releasing this week are of the slightest use, because you'll be far too busy exploring the new continent added in the game's second expansion. Or rolling a new Death Knight. Or working on being the first of your buddies to hit level 80. Or doing the million other things available in Lich King.
Mirror's Edge
Run and jump your way through a futuristic, Orwellian city in this gripping first-person adventure. Mirror's Edge star Faith is a "runner" -- an illicit courier, speeding messages from point to point in an effort to evade overbearing government surveillance. Can you conquer the rooftops and master Mirror's Edge unique Parkour-like style?
