Leave it to the internet to turn a tragic news item into a dorky diversion. As the world braces for more bad news about the swine flu pandemic, a crack squad of programmers have decided to fight the dreaded virus with an equally viral video game.
It's called Swinefighter, and what it lacks in taste, it also lacks in deep, rewarding gameplay. Players simply have to click like crazy to inject green pigs with a magical antidote, thus halting the spread of the virus and hopefully saving the world from more headlines about Swine flu. And to its credit, the Swinefighter site at least includes health tips from the CDC. How thoughtful.
Despite the overly simplistic fun, Swinefighter has been spreading at an alarming rate: well over 1 million games have been played in its short life already. Whether or not it will manage to outperform the last smash viral game based on a news story, the George W. Bush shoe-throwing gem Sock and Awe, remains to be seen.
