Sims 3 posts record-breaking sales

June 10 2:02 P.M.

It's party time at EA.

The latest in the blockbuster Sims series is already a million-seller, reports CNet. According to its publisher EA, The Sims 3 sold an eye-popping 1.4 million copies in its first week of availability, making it not only the most successful game in the series, but also EA's biggest ever PC game launch.

It's a critical favorite too, currently scoring an aggregate 87% on review tracking site metacritic.com. Fans are flocking to the game's official site in search of more content, where this sleek sports car and handy food replicator are among the most in-demand items. Another popular pastime: creating lookalike Sims based on fans' favorite celebs.

Even the iPhone version of The Sims 3 -- cut down heavily, of course, from its PC counterpart -- is selling well. Although EA isn't disclosing actual sales numbers, it shot straight to the top of the App Store charts at its release last week, where it remains at the time of writing. It's the third in a string of $9.99 EA iPhone games to hit the top spot.
