Stop me if you've heard this one: Apple is working on a new device that will play video games.
So says an unnamed analyst, who told financial magazine Barron's that Apple's forthcoming entry into the trendy netbook computer space will be a viable game platform, reports The Telegraph.
The source, who allegedly has seen a prototype model, claims that the still-unannounced device will boast the same touch-screen interface of the iPod Touch, but on a much sexier 10 inch screen. Positioned as a "home media hub," the tablet will also purportedly double as a gaming console. Experts have estimated the price to be around USD $800.
Unsurprisingly, Apple has yet to officially chime in, although the Telegraph does point out that in a recent earnings call, Apple COO Tim Cook mentioned that the company was indeed working on something "very innovative." How insightful.
But despite the vagaries, it's clear that Apple could profit from a bigger move into the gaming space. With games absolutely dominating the App Store and with the iPhone making waves in the lucrative casual games market, the company seems poised for gaming greatness. Provided, that is, consumers are interested in an AppleStationXbox.
