Although Nintendo's presentation at this week's E3 video game trade show held few surprises, it packed one piece of news that'll have Wii Fit fans smiling: the company plans to release a follow-up game later this year.

Nintendo aims to fly high with new hardware, software
Wii Fit Plus will be sold either bundled with a balance board, or as a stand-alone game for those who've already taken the Wii Fit plunge. It'll include 15 new balance minigames and six new strength and yoga workouts. It should be in stores this fall -- and given that the original Wii Fit has sold over 15 million copies so far, it's likely to be in high demand. Pricing hasn't yet been announced.
On the hardware side, Nintendo opted to demonstrate its already-released MotionPlus gadget that improves the accuracy of the Wii remote, but there was another intriguing announcement that could prick up the ears of Wii fitness devotees. It's called the Vitality Sensor, and it's a Wii-compatible heart-rate sensor that clips to your finger. Although Nintendo described the gadget as a tool for relaxation and stress relief rather than workouts, measuring your heart rate during a Wii Fit workout would be a great way to judge its effectiveness.
More traditional gamers had plenty to smile at, too: Nintendo announced a follow-up to Super Mario Galaxy, one of the highest rated games on the Wii, and a new title in the Metroid series of sci-fi shooters. More trailers.
