In the classic arcade game Space Invaders, a lonely spaceship is tasked with guarding the planet from hordes of nefarious aliens. Shooting them down is the only way to survive.
But in the experimental free game Lose/Lose, killing alien invaders isn't such a good idea: each enemy is tied to a real file on your computer. Destroy the alien, and you destroy the file.
Permanently.
Sound insane? That's sort of the point. The brainchild of Zach Gauge, Lose/Lose is something of a video game ethics class. The aliens won't fire back at the player, turning the game into a test of our aggressive nature and a statement about our ties to technology. The fact that it can also ruin your PC? Bonus points. Uh, sorta. From the maker:
"Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land? Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon and awarded for using it, that doing so is right?"
You can check out a perfectly safe video of the game running here.
