How to drive a (tiny) car with your PSP

April 13, 2009 2:10 P.M.

While poking around video game patent filings, the folks at Siliconera dug up a real gem: Sony Europe's PSP-controlled toy car.

The patent describes a wireless system in which gamers use Sony's handheld to drive a small, remote-controlled car with an even smaller camera strapped on top. The image from the camera is then transmitted back to the PSP screen, creating perhaps the greatest spy toy in the history of gaming.

The Device In Question

Don't believe us? In the patent's own words, "...a user may control the car...so as to spy on their friends… then upload the stored video images to a website.” Watch your skirts, ladies.

The patent also outlines a far less invasive application called an "augmented reality zone." It's essentially a racing game that allows users to build tracks out of real-world objects, which are then recognized and turned into virtual elements by the game. In other words, you'd be able to create a video game race track using living room furniture. Imagination? Who needs it!

Since it's just a patent, there's no guarantee this will ever see the light of day. Still, it's nice to see companies thinking outside the box, especially when it involves spy cams.
