Nascent online world Free Realms passed a huge milestone this week: it racked up its 3 millionth player, and all within 7 weeks of the game's launch.
That's a feat which even the mighty, genre-leading World of Warcraft took six months to achieve. Admittedly, you have to pay for World of Warcraft, and Free Realms accounts are, as the name suggests, free. But if Free Realms keeps on growing at this pace, it'll be within reach of the current free virtual world marketplace leader, Runescape, in just a few months.
"SOE worked diligently over the past four years to ensure that Free Realms would take the online space by storm," said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. "We are pleased to be able to provide such a vast, in-depth and, most importantly, fun world to an average of 500,000 new gamers per week."
If you're one of the ever-dwindling number of people never to have dipped a toe in Free Realms' free, family-friendly online world, you'll find all you need to know right here. And if you already have an account, Smedley's team has a celebratory gift for you: log into the game before this Friday and you'll receive a bundle of in-game items to prettify your pets.
