If you've got an HDMI-enabled television or monitor, be sure to pick up an HDMI cable for the PS3, as Sony doesn't include one in the box. With the cable, you can get the highest possible resolution from the system. Shop around, too, as prices can be inflated, and a twenty-dollar cable is just as good for most users as one priced at $100.
PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray Remote
Blu-Ray Remote (Sony; $24.99)
Console controllers are never very useful when doubling as a DVD remote, but Sony's dedicated BR Remote works like a charm. It can double as a controller to navigate the console's menus, and a set of batteries will last months, even under daily use.
PS2 to PS3 Controller and Memory Card Adaptors (Pelican; $14.99)
While some PS3 systems play old PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games better than others (newer models only have software emulation built in) those with massive libraries of classic games should have adaptors on hand to use with old memory cards and special controllers. Be aware, though, that Guitar Hero 2 is only partially supported.
Pro System Selector 2.0 (Pelican; $99.99)
This is actually sort of a cheat, as a system selector is valuable for nearly any user adding a console to a dense collection of A/V gear. Wire multiple video and audio systems through this box to easily choose a gaming, DVD or other source at will. The catch here is that a $100 system selector won't support HDMI, so if you want to take advantage of that aspect of the PS3 be ready to look into a more expensive selector.
