Face it: It's been a magnificent year for games. All three consoles are entering their prime, the PC still churns out unmissable classics, and despite a round of corporate consolidation, two out of three of our core picks are from smaller, tightly-knit development studios. It's also a testament to the maturity of the console market that so few of our picks this year are single-console exclusives. Outstanding games are coming out on increasingly diverse ranges of platforms, and that's a good thing for everyone. But much as we'd like to give awards to all of this year's picks, there were three that stood out from the crowd.
The Nominees Are...

Fallout 3
Who'd have thought life after the apocalypse would be this much fun? Bethesda's beautifully-crafted world took us all to gaming heaven amid nuclear hell.

Grand Theft Auto IV
You can't deny the impact Grand Theft Auto had on both the charts and the critics this year. A great game from a studio at the peak of its talent.

Left 4 Dead
The scariest multiplayer title of the year was also one of the best, easy. Taking on Left 4 Dead's zombie hordes with three good friends is an experience no gamer should miss.
