You could also argue that it's been a slow year for PC strategy games, and with the exceptions of Spore, Sins of a Solar Empire and Civilization IV: Colonization, you'd be pretty much on the money. Spore
Sims designer Will Wright's life simulator proved to be both revolutionary and evolutionary, following the development of a single, player-designed species from primordial ooze to interstellar domination. No other game this year boasted this kind of scope, and no other game this year posed such a unique set of challenges to its players.
