Fallout 3
It's appropriate that Fallout 3 opens with the literal birth of the game's central character, because Bethesda's stunning effort represented the rebirth of one of role-playing's most beloved settings. Fallout's post-apocalyptic world contrasts the optimism of the 1950s with the stark reality of the last days of humanity, and its open-ended approach to storyline brings the role-playing expertise of the Morrowind games to its new territory. It's packed with hilarious characters, great dialogue and unforgettable quest-lines, but, most impressive of all, it actually forces its players into making tough choices with real, meaningful consequences for the world. That's a tall order, yet one Fallout 3 managed to pull off with aplomb. Long live the apocalypse.
