Although World of Warcraft held its stranglehold over the online role-playing genre this year, plenty of awesome single-player games kept the market interesting. The nifty Sonic Chronicles, the gripping Sacred 2, and the imaginative The World Ends With You all caught our eyes, but none of them quite made our top three list. Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning

No, it didn't crumble the Warcraft cookie, but Warhammer Online proved a classy interpretation of a rich and exciting world, and provided some of the best player vs. player scraps we've seen in ages.
