Always a competitive genre, the Action nominations list sparked especially lively debate this year. Although there were two games that were clear standouts, there were an awful lot that missed a nomination by cruelly small margins. How could we pick three favorites from the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, Saints Row 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, Dead Space, Geometry Wars 2, or Metal Gear Solid 4? Somehow, we managed, and once the bickering stopped it was clear enough which action games deserved the nod.

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2
If this is what happens when racing game maestros Bizarre decide they need a break from the old routine, we're hoping they get lots of spare time. Frantic, fun, and a favorite at Yahoo! Games.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Nico Bellic stars in this inspired tale of betrayal, and if you haven't played it yet, you're either too young or too dead. In either case, please accept our sympathy and our assurance that it is really rather good.

Left 4 Dead
Not unlike its shambling, groaning stars, Left 4 Dead's persistence paid off, as it scored an easy nomination despite just coming out a few weeks ago. It doesn't take brains to know a great action game, you know.
