Supreme Commander
No offense to legendary game designer Chris Taylor, but we're glad he put his role-playing obsession on hold to get back to doing what he does best: crafting awesome strategy games. He hit pay-dirt once before in 1997 with Total Annihilation, and a decade later knocks it out of the universe with the laughingly large Supreme Commander. It's a stunning technical achievement, from its massive, seamless zoom feature to its built-in dual monitor support. But beyond the bells and whistles lies an astoundingly deep real-time strategy behemoth overflowing with units to manage (hundreds of them), tactics to consider and budgets to balance. There's no question that Supreme Commander isn't for everyone - it asks a lot from both the player and his PC - but it's hands-down the most impressive strategy game of the year.
