Best Shooter Game

The battle to choose the best shooter of 2007 raged almost as violently as the fights in its bulging list of nominations. As the dust settled, a well-deserved winner emerged by the slimmest of margins. Just a handful of points separated the top five choices in this category, making it easily the closest of all this year's races, and they're all superb games.

So how did they line up? Pipped to the post were The Orange Box -- not the only time it narrowly missed out on an award this year -- and EA's spectacular Crysis. Both fine games, to be sure, but our panel shot them down in favor of the following huge hits.

The Nominees Are...

Bioshock

Combining RPG-like plasmid powers with good ol'fashioned gunplay, Bioshock's innovative blend of undersea adventuring and libertarian ethics won countless fans.

Just when this series looked like it couldn't sink any further into predictability, along came this brilliant hit.

If you own an Xbox 360, chances are you own this. Microsoft's big hitter scored well, but there were better single-player choices out there this year.
