Super Mario Galaxy
Putting to rest any doubt about Nintendo's commitment to its loyal fan base, Super Mario Galaxy was released in November and quickly became a sales giant and a critical darling. Both for good reason - it's the best Mario game in a decade. Its titular hero tackles the entire galaxy, exploring dozens of gorgeous levels in pursuit of his stolen princess. Credit outrageously creative level design with making that task thrilling; it's a gravity-defying, axis-bending slice of platforming paradise that somehow manages to maintain playability while constantly challenging your perception of up and down. We were just as wowed by the game's stellar graphics, by far the prettiest yet on the Wii. Even though the cheesy, ridiculous story didn't evolve alongside the rest of the package, you don't play a Mario game for its plot. You play it for its action and adventure.
