Widely considered to be the finest shooter series ever made, it's also the brainchild of the unassuming Gabe Newell and the progenitor for last year's brilliant crack-up, Portal. Newell takes a break from the series with his next game, the acclaimed zombie frightfest Left 4 Dead.
